10 Most Amazing Temples in the World

More than a quarter of all people in the world belong to Eastern religions,
which include Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism, and Taoism. These people worship in
temples, which are architecturally as diverse as the religions are different
from each other. From the ancient ruins of Ankor Wat to the distinctly modern
Wat Rong Khun, there are hundreds if not thousands of amazing temples in the
world.

I have long been fascinated by the temples and sacred sites of Eastern
religions. After doing an article on some amazing churches from around the world
(10 Divinely Designed Churches), it’s only right that we do a follow up on the
ten most fascinating temples in Asia. Here they are, in no particular order:

Tiger’s Nest Monastery

Tiger’s Nest Monastery, perched precariously on the edge of a 3,000-feet-high
cliff in Paro Valley, is one of the holiest places in Bhutan. Legend has it that
Guru Rinpoche [wiki], the second Buddha, flew onto the cliff on the back of a tigress, and then
meditated in a cave which now exists within the monastery walls.

The monastery, formally called Taktshang Goemba, was built in 1692 and
reconstructed in 1998 after a fire. Now, the monastery is restricted to
practicing Buddhists on religious retreats and is off-limits to ordinary
tourists.

Wat Rong Khun

Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Rai, Thailand is unlike any Buddhist temples in the
world. The all-white, highly ornate structure gilded in mosaic mirrors that seem
to shine magically, is done in a distinctly contemporary style. It is the
brainchild of renowned Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat.

Actually, the temple is still under construction. Chalermchai expects it will
take another 90 years to complete, making it the Buddhist temple equivalent of
the Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona, Spain!

Prambanan

Prambanan is a Hindu temple in Central Java, Indonesia. The temple
was built in 850 CE, and is composed of 8 main shrines and 250 surrounding
smaller ones.

Nearly all the walls of the temple are covered in exquisite bas
relief carvings, which narrate stories of Vishnu’s incarnations, adventures of
Hanuman the Monkey King, the Ramayana [wiki] epic and other
legends.

Though not the biggest temple in Indonesia (Borobudur is larger -
see below), Prambanan makes up in beauty and grace for what it lacks in
size.

Shwedagon Pagoda

No one knows exactly when the Shwedagon Paya [wiki]
(or Pagoda) in Myanmar was built - legend has it that it is 2,500 years old
though archaeologists estimate that it was built between the 6th and 10th
century.

Now, when people say "golden temple" they usually mean that the
structure is golden in color. But when it comes to the Shwedagon Pagoda, golden
literally means covered in gold! In the 15th century, a queen of the Mon people
donated her weight in gold to the temple. This tradition continues until today,
where pilgrims often save for years to buy small packets of gold leafs to stick
to the temple walls.

As if all that gold wasn’t enough, the spire of the stupa or dome
is covered with over 5,000 diamonds and 2,000 rubies (there’s even a 76 carat
diamond at the very tip!). And oh, the temple housed one of the holiest relics
in Buddhism: eight strands of Buddha’s hair.

Temple of Heaven

The Temple
of Heaven [wiki] is a Taoist temple in Beijing, the capital of China. The
temple was constructed in 14th century by Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty
(who also built the Forbidden City) as his personal temple, where he would pray
for good harvest and to atone for the sins of his people.

The Temple’s architecture is quite interesting: everything in the
temple, which represents Heaven, is circular whereas the ground levels, which
represent the Earth, are square.

Chion-in Temple

Chion-in
Temple [wiki] was built in 1234 CE to honor the founder of Jodo (Pure Land)
Buddhism, a priest named Honen, who fasted to death in the very spot. At one
point in time, the complex had 21 buildings but due to earthquakes and fire, the
oldest surviving building is from the 17th century.

Visitors to the Chion-in Temple must first pass through the
largest gate in Japan: the two-story San-mon Gate. The temple bell is also a
record setter: it weighs 74 tons and needs 17 monks to ring it during the New
Year celebrations.

Another interesting feature of the Chion-in Temple is the
"singing" floor of the Assembly Hall. Called a uguisu-bari or
nightingale floor, the wooden planks were designed to creak at every footstep to
alert the monks of intruders!

Borobudur

In the 19th century, Dutch occupiers of Indonesia found a massive
ancient ruin deep in the jungles of Java. What they discovered was the complex
of Borobudur, a gigantic structure built with nearly 2 million cubic feet
(55,000 m³) of stones. The temple has nearly 2,700 relief panels and 504 Buddha
statues.

Until today, no one knows for sure when and why it was built, nor
the reason for its complete abandonment hundreds of years ago. Some scholars
believe that Borobudur is actually a giant textbook of Buddhism, as its bas
reliefs tell the story of the life of Buddha and the principles of his
teachings. To "read," a pilgrim must make his way through nine platforms and
walk a distance of over 2 miles.

Golden Temple

The Harmandir Sahib (meaning The Abode of God) or simply
the Golden Temple
[wiki] in Punjab, India is the most sacred shrine of Sikhism. For the Sikhs, the
Golden Temple symbolizes infinite freedom and spiritual independence.

The site of the Temple began with a small lake that was so
peaceful that even Buddha came there to meditate. Thousands of years later, Guru
Nanak, the founder of Sikhism also lived and meditate by the lake.

Construction of the Golden Temple began in the 1500s, when the
fourth Guru of Sikhism enlarged the lake that became Amritsar or Pool of the
Nectar of Immortality, around which the temple and the city grew. The
Temple itself is decorated with marble sculptures, gilded in gold, and covered
in precious stones.

Vishnu Temple of Srirangam

The Temple of Srirangam (Sri
Ranganathaswamy Temple [wiki]), in the Indian city of Tiruchirapalli (or
Trichy), is the largest functioning Hindu temple in the world (Ankor Wat is the
largest of all temple, but it is currently non-functioning as a temple - see
below).

The temple is dedicated to Vishnu, one of three Gods in Hinduism.
Legend has it that a long time ago, a sage rested and put down a statue of
Vishnu reclining on a great serpent. When he was ready to resume his journey, he
discovered that the statue couldn’t be moved, so a small temple was built over
it. Over centuries, the temple "grew" as larger ones were built over the
existing buildings.

The temple complex is massive: it encompasses an area of over 150
acres (63 hectares) with seven concentric walls, the outermost being about 2.5
miles (4 kilometers) long! The walls demarcate enclosures within enclosures,
each more sacred than the next, with the inner-most enclosure is forbidden to
non-Hindus.

The Temple of Srirangam is famous for its gopurams or
entrances beneath colorful pyramids. The temple has 21 gopurams total, with the
largest one having 15 stories and is nearly 200 feet (60 m) tall.

Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and Bayon

Last but definitely not least is the largest temple in history and
the inspiration to countless novels and action movies of Hollywood: Ankor
Wat.

Angkor Wat
[wiki] was built in the early 12th century in what is now Cambodia. The world
famous temple was first a Hindu one, dedicated to Vishnu. In the 14th or 15th
century, as Buddhism swept across Asia, it became a Buddhist temple.

The Western world’s got a glimpse of Angkor Wat when a 16th
century Portuguese monk visited the temple and eloquently described it as
"of such extraordinary construction that it is not possible to describe it
with a pen, particularly since it is like no other building in the world. It has
towers and decoration and all the refinements which the human genius can
conceive of." His words still rang true today.

Tourists visiting Angkor Wat usually also visit the nearby ruins
of Angkor Thom and Bayon
[wiki], two fantastic temples that serve as the ancient capital of Khmer
empire.

Here are some more amazing temples and sacred places that just couldn’t fit
in the list above:

Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple

Potala
Palace [wiki], built on top of the Red Mountain in Lhasa, Tibet, China was
built by the first emperor of Tibet in 637 CE. The current palace was
re-constructed in the mid-1600s by the fifth Dalai Lama.

The Palace consists of two main buildings, the Potrang Karpo
(White Palace) and Portrang Marpo (Red Palace). It was the chief home of the
fourteenth and current Dalai Lama until he was forced to flee to India when
China invaded Tibet in 1959. It is now a state museum.

Jokhan Temple
[wiki] is the spiritual center of Lhasa and is considered the most important and
sacred temple in Tibet. The temple was built in 642 CE and has since housed the
single most venerated object in Tibetan Buddhism: a statue of Gautama Buddha [wiki],
the founder of Buddhism.

The city of Lhasa has three concentric paths that pilgrims use to
walk to Jokhang Temple. Many actually prostrate themselves along these routes in
order to gain spiritual merit!

Varanasi

Varanasi in India is not a temple, but ais ctually a famous Hindu
holy city, located at the banks of the Ganges River. It is, however, often
called the "City of Temples," where almost every road crossing has a nearby
temple. A center of pilgrimage (as many as a million pilgrims visit Varanasi
each year), the city has links to Buddhism and Jainism as well.

7 amazing holes

(if you’re expecting filth you’ll be disappointed).

looking at photos like these scares and fascinates me in equal doses. the
sheer scale of these holes reminds you of just how tiny you are.

mirny diamond mine, ~~serbia~~ siberia

i’m pretty sure most people have seen this one. it’s an absolute beast and
holds the title of largest open diamond mine in the world. at 525 metres deep
with a top diameter of 1200 metres there’s even a no-fly zone above the hole due
to a few helicopters being sucked in.

kimberley big hole - south africa

apparently the largest ever
hand-dug excavation in the world, this 1097 metre deep mine yielded over 3
tonnes of diamonds before being closed in 1914.

the amount of earth removed by workers is estimated to total 22.5 million
tonnes.

glory hole - monticello dam

a glory hole is used when a dam is at full capacity and water needs to be
drained from the resevoir.

this is the glory hole belonging to monticello dam in california and it’s the
largest in the world, its size enabling it to consume 14′400 cubic feet of water
every second.

the hole can be seen at the top left of the photo above. if you were to jump
in for some reason your slightly damp body would shoot out near the bottom of
the dam (below).

bingham canyon mine, utah

this is supposedly the largest man-made
excavation on earth. extraction began in 1863 and still continues today, the pit
increasing in size constantly. in its current state the hole is 3/4 mile deep
and 2.5 miles wide.

great blue hole, belize

situated 60 miles off the mainland of belize is this incredible ‘geographical
phenomenon’ known as a blue hole. there are numerous blue holes around the world
but none as stunning as this one.

at surface level the near perfectly circular hole is 1/4 mile wide, the depth
in the middle reaching 145 metres. obviously the hole is a huge hit with divers.

diavik mine, canada

this incredible mine can be found 300km northeast of yellowknife in
canada.

the mine is so huge and the area so remote that it even has its own airport with a runway large
enough to accomodate a boeing 737. it also looks equally as cool when the
surrounding water is frozen.

sinkhole, guatemala

a sinkhole is caused when water (usually rainwater or sewage) is soaked up by
the earth on a large scale, resulting in the ground collapsing.

these photos are of a sinkhole which occured early this year in guatemala.
the hole swallowed a dozen homes and killed at least 3 people.

officials blamed the monster of a hole on a ruptured sewage pipe.

A satisfying drink enjoyed throughout the world with many

1- Vielle Bon Secours:

This tops the list of the world's most expensive
beer, costing around £500 (equivalent to around $1,000) per bottle or about £39
(equivalent to around $78) per pint. It can only be found in a bar called the
Bierdrome in London.

2- Samuel Adams' Utopias:

This beer is brewed by the Boston Beer
Company, using the brand name of Samuel Adam's Utopias, named after one of the
founding fathers of the USA. This comes second in the list of the world's most
expensive beer which costs around $100 per bottle (24 oz) or about $67 per pint,
sold in copper bottles resembling the copper brewing kettles which are used by
brewers for hundreds of years.

3-Tutankhamen Brew:

The recipe of this brew is prepared according to the
recipe and brewing method discovered by a team of University of Cambridge
archaeologists/Egyptologists in the Queen Nefertiti's Temple of the Sun in
Egypt. The brewery found in the corner of the said temple is believed to have
been built by King Akhenaton who is King Tutankhamen's father. This is also the
place where King Akhenaton queen, Nefertiti worshiped.

The archaeologists sought expert advice from Scottish
and Newcastle Breweries, Edinburgh and the beer is brewed in the Cambridge
laboratory, costing around $52 per bottle. The production is also limited and
the edition is also numbered.

Buckle Up, Stay Calm Keys to Escaping Sinking Car, Experts Say

Plunging 60 feet off a bridge in a car sounds like a sure death sentence, but survival experts say people can and do walk away from such a calamity, for a simple reason: They were wearing their seat belts.

"The people who got out without a scratch absolutely had their seat belts on," says Brian Brawdy, survival expert and a former New York City police officer. "If you're knocked unconscious because you weren't wearing your seat belt, you won't be swimming to the surface."

Kimberly Brown, who survived the bridge collapse, told "Good Morning America's" Robin Roberts that had she not been wearing her seat belt, she was certain she would have gone through her car's windshield.

With four confirmed fatalities, Minneapolis authorities say they expect the death toll to rise as vehicles' that fell more than 60 feet into the Mississippi River are recovered.

Chances of surviving for those still submerged in the river now almost 24 hours later are remote, experts say. The combination of the impact and the speed at which cars sink give passengers mere minutes to avoid suffocation.

"[Drivers] would have three to five minutes, depending on how much of the water is rushing in and then given the size of the car," says Brawdy.

While many people may assume that unbuckling a seat belt and attempting to escape is the first thing to do in a sinking car, experts say otherwise.

"You want to make sure the impact is over before you take off your seat belt," says Brawdy, who warns that drivers and passengers should be certain no other car or foreign object is heading toward their vehicle.

In addition to remaining buckled up, here's some other tips to maximize your chances of escaping from a sinking car.

Let Some Water Inside the Car
The weight of the engine will make the car nosedive into the water, and with water quickly surrounding the vehicle, passengers must allow the pressure to equalize before they waste their energy trying to open the doors or windows.

"You have to wait for some of the water to get in the car to equalize the pressure," says Brawdy. "You won't be able to open the door, and as counterintuitive as it sounds, you've got to let some water come in."

Wait until the water gets up to your sternum and that's the time to take as deep a breath as you can," he says. "The water pressure would have started to balance itself out and you're going to be able to swim out."

Don't Panic
While waiting for your car to fill with water is certainly panic-inducing, experts say panicking could severely diminish your chances of survival. Staying calm and preserving your energy and breath for when you have to swim out will make a huge difference.

"If you panic, you perish," says Brawdy. "Taking deep breathes is as important as anything. It calms your body. We are using energy when we panic, and then we become tired."

Losing your composure during a crisis situation will hinder your ability to make decisions that could ultimately be your key to survival.

"You've got to think methodically," says Lt. Joseph Conway of the Dive Team at the Madison, Wis., Fire Department. "Otherwise, what happens first is you'll hit the water and then you'll try to get out and you'll forget you didn't unbuckle your seat belt. "

MythBuster Busts Survival Myths
Many of those who fear suffocating in a sinking car are under false pretenses about what exactly happens when your car lands in water, as well as what the best ways to get out are.

"The car takes longer to sink than we think," says Adam Savage, co-host of Discovery Channel's "Mythbusters," which aired a segment on how to escape a sinking car. "We had time to try to unroll the window and open the door."

Another myth about sinking cars is that the car's battery will immediately fail when it hits the water. Savage says that people should still try to work the electric controls for the windows.

"People think the batteries will short out, but they won't," he says. "You easily have a couple of minutes, even if you're submerged, when the batteries will still work."

People commonly use the wrong tools and expend too much energy trying to break windows, Savage explains.

"Breaking the window with anything but special tools failed," says Savage, who tested different methods while submerged in a swimming pool. "Steel-toe boots and a multitool had no effect on the window, but a special hammer tool worked like a charm."

There are several of these tools on the market. ThinkGeek, an electronic commerce company based in Fairfax, VA, has created a 5-in-1 tool called, The BodyGuard, which can break glass and cut seatbelts and has an alarm, a flashing red light and an LED flashlight. The ResQMe keychain is a similar device. The Life Hammer is designed to shatter glass and strip seatbelts.

CSS Redundancy Checker

While I’m primarily a developer, I end up spending a lot of time working with CSS and other front end technologies. I’ve learned a lot about CSS, but I don’t use it enough to have really good habits and often end up with superfluous selectors and bloated code. So when Tom Armitage’s CSS Redundancy Checker popped up in my feed reader I was intrigued. Tom’s solution is simple, elegant, and reasonably quick. But it’s a command line app that requires ruby and some additional packages — not exactly newb (or lazy programmer) friendly. Since I was looking for an excuse to play with Rails a bit more, I decided to write a web front end and build an Online CSS Redundancy Checker on top of Tom’s code. Read the rest of this entry »

The checker asks for your stylesheet URI and a list of HTML pages to analyze. The parser scans the specified stylesheet looking for CSS selectors that are not present in any of the HTML pages listed. Since these selectors are not used anywhere, they can probably be removed from your stylesheet without causing any problems.

Before you get too excited, there are some caveats. The redundancy checker does not understand javascript, and may tell you that certain selectors are redundant simply because they don’t appear in your static HTML. If you use javascript to manipulate your HTML documents (e.g., by adding class attributes on hover, etc.) you should be aware of this problem. You may also have selectors that apply to only one or two HTML documents that are buried in some obscure location on your site. So be careful, and think before you delete!

At this point the CSS Redundancy Checker is fairly primitive, with limited input options and no real API. If there’s enough interest I’m willing to add features (e.g., a sitemap parser so you don’t have to input page URIs by hand). If you have any thoughts, suggestions, problems, feature requests, etc. please let me know in the comments. Otherwise, enjoy.

Single line of HTML crashes IE 6

A Japanese blogger who goes by the name
Hamachiya2 has discovered a single line of HTML and CSS that crashes IE 6. The line is:

<style>*{position:relative}</style><table><input></table>

If you’re brave, you canclick here to try it out. The code is rendered correctly in Firefox, Safari and Opera (didn’t get a chance to try any other browsers, but presumably they work too). But in IE 6 it raises a fatal error in mshtml.dll.

On June 8th and 9th 2007, around 1,500 UK cyclists and skaters in five cities
participated in the fourth worldwide naked protest against oil dependency. On
all the rides, full nudity was permitted by the police. There were no arrests.

The ride draws attention to the elegant simplicity of the bicycle, highlights
the vulnerability of riders in traffic and celebrates the power and
individuality of our bodies. It's 'as bare as you dare', so full nudity is not
required.

I like startup and shutdown times: The startup time for the Eee is about 10 seconds, and that’s when it’s being slow. Shutdown is performed with the simple one click of an “off” icon in the lower right hand of the screen (this “off” graphic is always present) and the total shutdown time is a whopping 5 seconds.

The design is not special but at least is not ugly like OLPC. The screen seems to be cheap one but we should remember the Eee PC total cost…
